Boise Has Caught Pickleball Fever — And It’s Not Slowing Down
If you have been to Settlers Park in Meridian, Orchard Park on the south side of Boise, or the courts at Eagle Sports Complex lately, you already know: pickleball has taken over. The courts are packed from April through October, and late summer is peak season. Retirees, college students, parents dragging kids along to watch, competitive athletes keeping sharp in the off-season. All of them out there, morning through evening, in the Idaho heat.
Across the Treasure Valley there are now dozens of dedicated pickleball courts, with more under construction in Nampa and Star. Local leagues are full with waitlists. Indoor winter facilities are booking out months ahead. August and September are prime playing time before the weather turns. Serious players are out there three to five sessions per week right now. Which makes this a good moment to talk about something most players are completely overlooking: what is actually in the water they are drinking.
Why Pickleball Is Surprisingly Demanding on Your Body
Pickleball looks easy from the sideline. Then you play it. The constant lateral shuffling, the quick explosive bursts to reach a drop shot, the long rallies that stretch your legs and cardio more than you expect. Add outdoor play in Boise’s August heat, where afternoon temperatures regularly push 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and you have a genuinely demanding athletic environment.
During outdoor play at 85°F and above, recreational pickleball players lose between 0.5 and 1.5 liters of sweat per hour depending on intensity and individual sweat rate. That is not a small amount. And sweat is not just water. When you sweat, you lose electrolytes in a specific order: sodium goes first and in the largest quantity, then potassium, then magnesium.

Most hydration conversations focus on what you put in: electrolyte packets, drink mixes, coconut water, sports drinks. All of that sits on top of the base. But the base, the tap water you are filling your bottle with at home before you drive to Settlers Park, has its own mineral profile. And in Boise and Meridian, that profile is worth knowing.
Boise and Meridian municipal water runs hard. We are talking 10 to 15 grains per gallon in Boise, 12 to 17 in Meridian. That hardness is primarily calcium carbonate. What hard water is not rich in is bioavailable magnesium. So when you rehydrate post-match with straight tap water, you are getting a mineral load that is heavy on calcium and relatively light on the magnesium your muscles are actually asking for. As water flows through that basalt, it picks up minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and silica.
